Purpose of stay – Whether you are coming to Australia to study, work, visit, or live permanently, you must apply for a specific visa category.

Length of stay – The length of your stay in Australia will determine the type of visa you need to apply for.

The course of study – If you are coming to Australia to study, the course you are enrolled in will determine the type of student visa you need to apply for.

Work eligibility – If you wish to work in Australia while you study, you will need to apply for a visa that allows you to work a certain number of hours per week.

It’s important to note that the specific requirements for a student visa may vary based on the country of study, so it’s best to check with us directly during your free consultation.

It is a requirement to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to cover the entire period of your studies in Australia. True Blue Studies will organise this insurance for you once you receive your confirmation of course enrolment. To apply for your student visa, we will purchase OSHC which covers the entire duration of your study, and invoice you for the cost. True Blue Studies does not add any extra fees to this invoice, and you will only be covering the cost of your chosen insurance.

Furthermore, if you are applying for a student visa with an accompanying member, whether it is your spouse, parent, child, or de facto – they must also purchase insurance for the period in which they intend to stay in Australia.

True Blue Studies recommend these tips when choosing your student insurance:

Check the requirements
Your chosen education provider may request that you as a student be covered by an insurance plan prior to commencing your studies. Therefore, when purchasing insurance, it is crucial to know the dates of your course start and end date. True Blue Studies can assist with this task.

Compare insurance plans when doing research
It is important to do your research on the type of insurance you would prefer to be covered by. Although it is easy to choose the cheapest option, it may not fit your requirements which you wish to cover when in a country away from home. Therefore, consider the benefits covered and specifically, what is excluded from the insurance plan.

True Blue Studies can assist with any questions regarding what is included in your insurance plan.

Remember to read the fine print!

It is easy to miss out on the fine print when signing a contract/insurance plan. It is recommended that you know everything that is excluded from the plan as some types of coverage may not include such things as hospitalizations which if ever you need, you may be disappointed to find out that it is not covered when it is most needed.

Always read the fine print to find out the waiting periods inside the insurance plan which is the period of time that is not covered before a certain limit, after which the entire insurance plan will go into action.

Tips from the True Blue Studies team

Choose insurance that has offices in the cities in which you will be living in. It is very important due to the fact that sometimes it is easier to just speak to an insurance agent face to face and solve a problem in case of a complicated situation rather than being on the phone.

If you are opening a business in Australia or want to work as an Uber driver or similar, you will need an ABN.

An ABN is a unique 11-digit number that identifies your business to the government and community. You can use an ABN to identify your business to others when ordering and invoicing and avoid pay-as-you-go (PAYG) tax on payments you get.

You need a Tax File Number (TFN) as soon as you arrive. You can acquire one if you are opening an Australian bank account or are earning money in this country.

When starting a new job in Australia, your employer will provide you with a Tax File Number declaration form. This form will be returned to the Australian Tax Office (or commonly called: ‘ATO’). You can even check how much taxes your employer will deduct from your salary on the ATO website here https://www.ato.gov.au/Calculators-and-tools/Tax-withheld-calculator/

Tips from the True Blue Studies team:

Do this as soon as you arrive in Australia! This will save you a lot of stress.

There is no cost involved when registering for an ABN. Although, you most likely will be requested to pay if you have dealt with an accountant consultation or tax agent appointment, as they will have a fixed fee for the services they provided during their consultation.

Look up the Australian Business Register and follow the online application process.

The key information you should have ready before applying:

– Tax File Number (TFN)
– Tax agent registration number
– Any previous ABN/CAN/ARBN
– Legal trading name of the entity
– Contact details of key personnel in the company (owner)
– Business activity and locations

The time to finalize your ABN depends on whether you have provided all the required information and documents. ATO may want to confirm or validate some information before sending it through your ABN. You should receive your ABN immediately after you have finalized your application if done correctly.

You should cancel your ABN if your business is no longer operating or you have sold your business. Please make sure you have talked with your accountant or bookkeeper before canceling your ABN in case you need to pay off any obligations for your business.

You can cancel your ABN by going online to myGovID and filling out an online form or lodging a form by mail. You can also contact the Australian Business Register in case you need help.

Tips from the True Blue Studies team –

We suggest you talk with your friends who have already done it. When we came to Australia on student visas years ago, we applied for an ABN but needed help during our application, so we asked for advice from people who had experience with it for our ABN to be accepted.

You can apply for an Australian Tax File Number after arriving in Australia on a temporary visa, permanent migrant visa, or temporary visitor visa.

You can apply online if you meet the following three conditions –

1. You are a temporary visitor, permanent migrant, or foreign passport holder.
2. You are in staying in Australia
3. You have one of the following visas:

– Permanent Migrant Visa
– Visa with work rights
– An overseas student Visa
– Visa allowing you to be in Australia indefinitely

When applying online, it is a requirement to have a valid passport or relevant travel documents. If it’s been applied correctly, you should receive your TFN within 28 days by post to the address you have provided online when completing the TFN application.

You can apply for your TFN here https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/tax-file-number/apply-for-a-tfn/foreign-passport-holders,-permanent-migrants-and-temporary-visitors—tfn-application/
